   Mahabodhi Temple

   A brick tower some fifty metres high on the spot where the Buddha is said to have been enlightened, its present form Gupta work of the fifth or sixth century over Ashoka's foundation. A descendant of the original fig tree grows against its west wall.

   Barabar Caves

   The oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India, hewn under the Mauryas in the third century BC and polished inside to a mirror finish that still holds an echo. Forster used them for the Marabar caves in A Passage to India.

   Vishnupad Temple, Gaya

   A temple on the Falgu at Gaya built over a basalt footprint forty centimetres long, held to be Vishnu's, left when he pressed a demon into the earth. The present building was raised in 1787 by the Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar.

   Lomas Rishi Cave

   A rock-cut cave in the Barabar hills in Jehanabad district in Bihar. It was carved in the third century BC, under Ashoka of the Maurya empire, as a sanctuary for the Ajivika sect; its doorway imitates a timber hut in stone.

   Sujata Garh

   A stupa across the river from Bodh Gaya marking the house of the village woman who gave the Buddha a bowl of milk-rice, ending the fast that had nearly killed him. It is a twenty-minute walk from the main temple.

   Mangla Gauri Temple

   A hilltop temple at Gaya counted among the shakti pithas, named in several of the Puranas, and one of the eighteen the tradition holds most important. The present building goes back to the fifteenth century.

   The Great Buddha

   A seated Buddha of twenty-five metres in sandstone and granite at Bodh Gaya, consecrated by the fourteenth Dalai Lama in November 1989 and the tallest in India when it was built. Ten disciples stand along the approach.
