   Lingaraja Temple

   An eleventh-century Shiva temple and the largest in Bhubaneswar, its tower rising fifty-five metres over a compound of dozens of small shrines. Non-Hindus view it from a platform on the outer wall, built for a visiting viceroy.

   Dhauli

   A hill above the Daya river south of Bhubaneswar where Ashoka is said to have turned to Buddhism after the slaughter of his Kalinga campaign. His rock edicts are cut into the stone, and a white peace pagoda was added in the 1970s.

   Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves

   Two facing hills of rock-cut cells, cut in the first century BC for Jain monks under King Kharavela. The Hathigumpha inscription in one of them is the main surviving source for his reign, and the caves are carved with elephants, dancers and hunting scenes.

   Muktesvara deula

   A small Shiva temple of the tenth century, generally called the gem of Odisha architecture, and the point at which the local style came together. Its free-standing carved arch, a torana, is the only one of its kind in the region.

   Rajarani Temple

   An eleventh-century temple that no longer holds a deity, so it is visited purely for the carving — the tower is ringed with female figures at their toilet, in a manner that has earned it comparison with Khajuraho.

   Ananta Vasudeva Temple

   A thirteenth-century temple to Krishna beside the Bindusagar tank, and the only major Vishnu temple in the old town. Its kitchen still cooks the offering food that pilgrims buy in the courtyard.

   Brahmeswara Temple

   A Shiva temple of 1058, carved inside and out, whose foundation inscription is unusually informative — it records that the king's daughter dedicated dancing girls to the temple, the earliest such reference in Odisha.

   Chausath Yogini Temple, Hirapur

   A ninth-century temple twenty kilometres outside the city, circular and open to the sky, with sixty-four yogini figures carved in niches around the inner wall. Only four such temples survive in India, and this is the best preserved of them.

   A fortified city south of Bhubaneswar, occupied from about the seventh century BC and laid out on a grid with rammed-earth ramparts a kilometre square. It is among the largest and best-preserved early historic settlements in India.
