   Charminar

   Monument in Hyderabad built in 1591 to mark the founding of the city, with four minarets fifty-six metres high. A mosque occupies its upper floor.

   Golconda

   A Kakatiya mud fort that the Qutb Shahis rebuilt in granite on a hundred-and-twenty-metre hill. The acoustics are the demonstration: a clap under the entrance dome is heard clearly at the top of the citadel, a kilometre away. The Koh-i-Noor passed through the diamond market below it.

   Salar Jung Museum

   The collection of one man, Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, and the largest anywhere assembled by a single person. The Veiled Rebecca, carved so the marble reads as gauze, and a British bracket clock in which a toy blacksmith strikes the hour, are the two things every visitor is taken to.

   Mecca Masjid

   The largest mosque in Hyderabad, begun in 1614 and finished eight decades later, with room for ten thousand. Bricks made from soil brought back from Mecca are set into the central arch, and the Nizams are buried in a hall along one side.

   L. B. Nagar

   A commercial and residential quarter in the southeast of Hyderabad, a municipality of its own in Ranga Reddy district until the city absorbed it in 2007. Its junction is one of the busiest interchanges in the city, and the metro's Red Line ends here.

   Falaknuma Palace

   Built in 1893 to a plan shaped like a scorpion, and used by the Nizam to lodge guests — the dining table seats a hundred and one. The Taj group spent ten years restoring it and it is now a hotel; non-residents can book the tour and the afternoon tea.

   Spanish Mosque

   A mosque of 1906 inside the Paigah palace grounds at Begumpet, built in Moorish Revival with spires instead of the usual domes — a form found nowhere else in India. The nobles who commissioned it had travelled in Spain.

   Alwal

   A district north of Hyderabad, adjoining Secunderabad. Barracks and a grid of roads survive from the British cantonment period, and military installations still take up a good part of it.

    Bolarum

    A cantonment north of Secunderabad that began as a British cavalry station in the nineteenth century. The parade ground, the garrison church and the officers' bungalows are still standing and still in military use.

   Chowmahalla Palace

   The palace of the Nizams of Hyderabad, begun in the eighteenth century and finished in the nineteenth, where they received guests and held court. Its durbar hall keeps nineteen Belgian chandeliers, and its restoration won a UNESCO award in 2010.

   Birla Mandir, Hyderabad

   A white marble temple to Venkateswara on a rock eighty-five metres above the city, completed in 1976 and built without any traditional temple tower. It is open to all castes and faiths, and looks down on Hussain Sagar lake.

   A Hindu temple in Hyderabad in Telangana. Its principal deity is Hanuman shown in meditation, with shrines to other gods in the same compound.

   Qutb Shahi tombs

   The burial ground of the Qutb Shahi dynasty in a walled garden near Golconda, holding around thirty domed tombs, mosques and a mortuary bath. It is the only necropolis in India where a whole dynasty lies in one place, and has been under long restoration.

   Buddha Statue of Hyderabad

   Granite statue of the Buddha standing eighteen metres on a rock in Hyderabad's Hussain Sagar lake. It was carved from a single block over five years and raised in 1992.

   Nehru Zoological Park

   A zoo at Bahadurpura in Telangana, near the Mir Alam Tank. It is among the most visited places in Hyderabad, and its animals are kept in open enclosures rather than cages.

   Kasu Brahmananda Reddy National Park

   One point six square kilometres of the Nizam's former estate in Jubilee Hills, kept as a walking park rather than developed. Some six hundred plant species, peacocks and a five-kilometre path circling it, used hard at dawn by the surrounding neighbourhoods.
