   Gateway of India

   A basalt arch of twenty-six metres on the Mumbai waterfront, finished in 1924 to mark a royal visit of 1911, in a Gujarati style with Islamic detail. The last British troops in India marched out through it in 1948.

   Dharavi

   A district of about two square kilometres in the middle of Mumbai holding perhaps a million people, and long described as one of the largest slums in the world. It is also a working industrial quarter — recycling, leather and pottery with a turnover in the hundreds of millions.

   Haji Ali Dargah

   A Sufi shrine of the fifteenth century on an islet off Worli, reached by a stone causeway that the tide covers twice a day. Pilgrims of every faith walk out to it, and the walk back is timed against the water.

   Sanjay Gandhi National Park

   A hundred and four square kilometres of forest inside the city limits — leopards live in it and occasionally take dogs from the suburbs at the edge. The Kanheri caves are inside the park: a hundred and nine Buddhist cells and halls cut into basalt from the first century BC onward.

   Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

   Mumbai's principal museum, opened in 1922 in Indo-Saracenic style under a tiled dome, covering Indian art and archaeology from prehistory onwards. Its miniature painting and Himalayan collections are the strongest parts.

   Siddhivinayak Temple, Mumbai

   A Hindu temple to Ganesha in the Prabhadevi district of Mumbai. Laxman Vithu and Deubai Patil first built it on 19 November 1801, and it is among the wealthiest temples in India.

   Worli

   One of the seven islands that became Mumbai, now a district in the middle of the city. The sea link from here to Bandra, opened in 2009, curves five and a half kilometres across the bay on cables.

   Nariman Point

   Business district of Mumbai built from the 1970s on land reclaimed from the sea. Its towers held some of the highest office rents in the world in the 1990s.

   Mumba Devi Temple

   The temple of the goddess the city is named for. The original stood where Victoria Terminus does now and was moved to Bhuleshwar in 1737 when the British wanted the ground; the image has a silver face, a nose ring and no mouth.

    Mahim

    District of Mumbai around a fourteenth-century mosque and the church of St Michael. Its dargah draws Hindus and Muslims alike, and the annual fair lasts ten days.

   Kamathipura

   A quarter first settled after 1795 by Telugu construction workers — the kamathis who built the causeways joining Bombay's islands. It became the largest red-light district in Asia under the Raj; the trade has shrunk sharply and the ground is being redeveloped block by block.

   Bandra Kurla Complex

   A business district built from the 1970s on reclaimed marshland, laid out to draw offices away from the crowded southern tip of the city. It now holds the stock exchange's rivals, the consulates and some of the most expensive floor space in Asia.

   Malabar Hill

   One of the wealthiest residential districts of Mumbai, home to industrialists and film people. South Court, the Jinnah house, the residence of the chief minister of Maharashtra, the Hanging Gardens, the Jain temples and the Banganga tank are all here.

   Crawford Market

   A market of 1869 given to the city by a Parsi philanthropist. The stone friezes of Indian peasants over the entrance were carved by Lockwood Kipling, Rudyard's father, who taught at the art school nearby. It was the first building in India to be lit by electricity.

   Aarey Milk Colony

   A tract of two thousand acres inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park. About a quarter of it is mixed moist deciduous forest, and it serves as a buffer between the park and the built city, one of the few green spaces left in Mumbai.

   Aksa Beach

   A beach at Malad on Mumbai's northern edge, backed by cottages and hotels and busy at weekends. The undertow here is dangerous and drownings are common; swimming is officially discouraged.

   Rajabai Clock Tower

   A clock tower of eighty-five metres in the university's Fort campus, finished in 1878 and modelled on the Westminster clock tower. A merchant paid for it in memory of his blind mother, who had counted the hours by its chimes.

   Mount Mary Church

   A basilica on a hill at Bandra holding a statue of the Virgin that fishermen are said to have found in the sea in the sixteenth century. The Bandra fair each September brings hundreds of thousands, Hindu and Muslim among them.

   Parel

   One of the seven original islands of Bombay, later the heart of the cotton mill district and now a corridor of residential towers built on the mill land. A few of the chimneys have been kept as decoration.

    Girgaum Chowpatty

    A beach at the eastern end of Marine Drive below Malabar Hill, where Mumbai eats bhelpuri in the evenings. The city's Ganesh idols are carried into the sea here at the end of the September festival.
