   Hawa Mahal

   A five-storey screen of pink sandstone, 1799, pierced by 953 small latticed windows so that the women of the palace could watch processions in the street without being seen. In places it is barely a room deep — a facade with a building only just behind it.

   Amber Fort

   The Kachwaha capital before Jaipur, begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh, a general of Akbar's. The Sheesh Mahal is set with mirror so that one candle lights the whole room. It became World Heritage in 2013; jeeps now carry most visitors up the ramp that elephants used to.

   Jal Mahal

   A palace in the middle of Man Sagar lake, built in the eighteenth century. Four of its five storeys stand under water when the lake is full, so that only the top floor and its roof garden show.

   Jaigarh Fort

   Built in 1726 on the ridge above Amber to protect it, and never taken. It holds Jaivana, the largest wheeled cannon ever cast, fired exactly once as a test — the ball is said to have landed thirty-five kilometres away. Its water tanks are rumoured to have held the state treasury.

   City Palace

   The palace of the Jaipur maharajas, begun in 1729 when the city was founded and still partly lived in by the family. Its courtyards hold two silver urns of nearly a tonne and a half each, made to carry Ganges water to England.

   Nahargarh Fort

   A hill fort of 1734 on the Aravalli ridge with the whole city laid out below it. Sawai Madho Singh added nine identical suites for nine queens, linked by corridors arranged so that the king could visit any one of them without the other eight knowing.

   Albert Hall Museum

   Rajasthan's state museum, opened in 1887 in an Indo-Saracenic building by a British engineer who published pattern books of Indian ornament. It holds an Egyptian mummy and a Persian garden carpet, and is floodlit at night.

   Birla Mandir

   A white marble temple of 1988 on Moti Dungri hill, built by the Birla family and open to all. The stained glass runs through the Hindu epics and then, unexpectedly, takes in Socrates, Buddha and Christ.

   Govind Dev Ji Temple

   A temple to Krishna inside the City Palace gardens, holding an image brought from Vrindavan to keep it from Mughal iconoclasm. Seven aartis are performed daily and the courtyard fills for each of them.

    Galtaji

    A pilgrimage site in a gorge ten kilometres east of Jaipur, where spring water fills a chain of tanks between pink sandstone pavilions. The resident macaques are why visitors call it the monkey temple.

   A Ganesha temple in Jaipur in Rajasthan. It was built in 1761 under the supervision of Seth Jai Ram Paliwal and stands beside the Birla temple.

   Jagat Shiromani Temple

   A seventeenth-century Hindu temple at Amer outside Jaipur in Rajasthan. It is dedicated jointly to Krishna and Vishnu and to Mirabai, the poet-saint of the bhakti movement, which is an unusual combination.

   Jawahar Circle

   A circular garden built inside a roundabout on the southern edge of Jaipur, and the largest of its kind in India. It is laid out as a Mughal-style garden in concentric rings, and fills with walkers in the evening.

   A Hindu temple in the Sireh Deori bazaar in Jaipur in Rajasthan, opposite the main gate of the City Palace. Jai Singh II built it in the eighteenth century, and a white marble horse stands in its courtyard.
