Crete is the largest Greek island and was the seat of Europe's first civilisation. Knossos, outside Heraklion, was a palace of a thousand rooms around 1900 BC, dug and partly rebuilt by Arthur Evans from 1900.
The archaeological museum in town holds what came out of it. The island is big enough to need a week: the Venetian harbour at Chania, the pink sand at Elafonissi, and the sixteen-kilometre Samaria gorge.

Knossos
The largest Bronze Age site on Crete and the centre of Minoan civilisation, occupied from about 7000 BC. Arthur Evans dug it from 1900 and rebuilt parts in painted concrete — restoration that most archaeologists now consider went far too far, and which is why the place reads as it does.
