   Castle of Chios

   A citadel on the north side of Chios harbour, first walled by the Byzantines and rebuilt by the Genoese who held the island from 1346. Ottoman houses, a bath and a small graveyard stand within walls that still enclose a lived-in quarter.

   Mecidiye Museum Mosque

   The Byzantine museum of Chios, in the Mecidiye mosque raised on the town square under Ottoman rule in the 19th century and left empty when the island passed to Greece in 1912. Sculpture, icons and Genoese tomb slabs fill the prayer hall and the courtyard.

   Archaeological site of Daskalopetra

   A rock-cut shrine to the goddess Cybele at Daskalopetra near Vrontados on Chios in Greece. It dates from the late sixth or early fifth century BC and is regarded as the earliest known site of the cult of Cybele in the Greek world.

   Volissos Castle

   A castle on the hill above Volissos in northwest Chios, Byzantine in origin and long said to have been raised by the men of Belisarius. The Genoese rebuilt it with six towers in the 14th century, and it is protected as an archaeological site.
