Syros is the administrative capital of the Cyclades and was its commercial one first — refugees from Chios built Ermoupoli in the 1820s in marble and neoclassical stucco, with an opera house modelled on La Scala.

Above it, Ano Syros is a Catholic hill town from the Venetian centuries, still Catholic today. Rebetiko music grew here. It is an island that works for a living and takes visitors as a side effect.
