   A Bronze Age settlement north of Mytilene, dug by Winifred Lamb in the 1930s, whose five building levels run back to about 3000 BC. Its small houses along narrow lanes closely match the plan of Troy across the water.

   The pilgrimage church of Agiasos, built around an icon of the Virgin said to have been painted by St Luke and carried here from Jerusalem in the ninth century. Thousands walk up the mountain for the feast of the Dormition on 15 August.

   Methymna

   The ancient city on the hill at Molyvos, second only to Mytilene on Lesbos and its rival for centuries. Its acropolis lies beneath the medieval castle, and stretches of classical wall and cemetery have been dug on the slopes below.
