Salalah sits in Dhofar, the frankincense country whose trees, caravan routes and ruined port at Khor Rori were listed as World Heritage in 2000. From July to September the khareef monsoon rolls off the Indian Ocean and turns the mountains behind the town green, with mist, waterfalls and grazing camels.

This was the land of frankincense, still tapped from trees in the wadis, and the trading sites are World Heritage. Wadi Darbat fills with water, and the blowholes at Mughsail throw spray back over the road. Gulf families come here to escape the heat.

Tomb of Job
A shrine in the hills above Salalah held to be the tomb of the prophet Job, revered by Muslims, Jews and Christians alike. It stands where the monsoon mist gathers, looking down over the coastal plain.

Al Baleed Archeological Park
The excavated port of Zafar, which shipped frankincense and Arabian horses to India and China and which Marco Polo describes. It is part of the Land of Frankincense World Heritage listing, and the museum on the site covers both the resin trade and Omani shipbuilding.

A museum at Salalah opened in 2007 on frankincense — how it is tapped, traded and used — beside the excavated port of Al-Baleed, from which it was shipped. Both are part of a World Heritage listing.
