Dong Hoi is the door to Phong Nha-Ke Bang, a World Heritage limestone massif riddled with the largest caves known anywhere.

Son Doong, whose main passage could hold a city block, was only explored in 2009 and takes a handful of permits a year at considerable expense. Paradise Cave and Phong Nha itself are open to anyone, the latter entered by boat along an underground river.

    Nhat Le Beach

    A long beach of pale sand at the mouth of the Nhat Le river at Dong Hoi, with the dunes of Bao Ninh across the water. Fishing boats work off it at dawn, and the shore runs almost unbroken north towards the Phong Nha country.

    Da Nhay Beach

    A beach forty kilometres north of Dong Hoi whose name means jumping rocks, from the thousands of black rocks that run out into the sea around small stretches of sand.

    Tam Toa Church

    The ruin of a Catholic church at Dong Hoi, built in the late nineteenth century and destroyed by American bombing in February 1965. The bell tower and part of the front were left standing and are kept as a war memorial.
