   Wapauwe Old Mosque

   A mosque at Kaitetu on Ambon dated to 1414 and reckoned the oldest surviving in Indonesia. It is jointed timber without a single nail, and was dismantled and moved twice when the village relocated.

   Fort of Our Lady of the Annunciation

   The oldest building in Ambon, begun by the Portuguese in 1575 and taken over by the Dutch, who made it the seat of the spice monopoly in Maluku. The Indonesian army occupies it now and access is limited.

   Fort Amsterdam

   A Dutch blockhouse of 1637 at Hila on the north coast of Ambon, built to control the clove trade. It stands restored among the palms with a small graveyard of company servants beside it.

   St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, Ambon

   The cathedral of the Amboina diocese, named for Francis Xavier, who preached through the Moluccas in the 1540s. The mission here began as an apostolic prefecture in 1902 and was raised to a diocese in 1961.

   Museum Siwa Lima

   The provincial museum of Maluku, named from the Siwa and Lima confederations that once divided the islands. Boats, textiles, carved ancestor figures and the porcelain traded for cloves fill its rooms.
