   Fort Rotterdam

   A Dutch fort of the 1670s built over a Gowa sultanate fort, laid out in the shape of a turtle because Makassar was a sea power and a land power at once. Prince Diponegoro was held prisoner in it for twenty-six years; it now holds two museums.

   A mosque at Makassar in South Sulawesi in Indonesia. Work began in 1994 and finished in 1996; it holds ten thousand and is among the principal centres of Islamic activity in Southeast Asia.

   Great Mosque of Makassar

   The principal mosque of South Sulawesi province, in Makassar in Indonesia. Work began in 1948 and finished the following year, and it was substantially rebuilt between 1999 and 2005.

   Katangka Mosque

   The oldest mosque in South Sulawesi, built in 1603 by the first sultan of Gowa to accept Islam, on the edge of the old royal capital. Its thick walls and single tiered roof follow the pattern of early Indonesian mosques.

   Sacred Heart Cathedral

   The Catholic cathedral of Makassar, seat of an archdiocese whose history the church traces to Portuguese priests who reached the city in the 1520s. The present neo-Gothic building stands near the old fort.

   99 Domes Mosque

   A mosque on reclaimed land at Losari, designed by the architect and governor Ridwan Kamil with ninety-nine domes for the ninety-nine names of God. Tiers of red, orange and yellow face the sea; it opened for prayer in 2022.
