   Sangiran

   An eroded dome of some 56 square kilometres in the Solo valley, 15 km north of Surakarta, where beds laid down over nearly two million years lie exposed. Digs since the 1930s have produced scores of Homo erectus fossils, and UNESCO listed the site in 1996.

   Masjid Wustho Mangkunegaran

   An old mosque west of the Mangkunegaran palace in Surakarta. It is one of the three oldest mosques in the city and was consecrated as the state mosque of the Mangkunegaran house.

   Great Mosque of Surakarta

   The royal mosque of the Surakarta court, built in the eighteenth century in Javanese style with a tiered roof on wooden pillars rather than a dome. It stands on the palace square and its drum still calls prayer.

   A former sugar refinery and museum 12.7 kilometres from the centre of Surakarta. Mangkunegara IV founded it in 1862 together with the government of the Dutch East Indies.

    Kraton of Surakarta

    The palace of the Susuhunan of Surakarta, laid out in 1745 when the Mataram court moved here from Kartasura. Whitewashed walls, a blue and white tower and a courtyard of ancient trees enclose a museum of the court's carriages, weapons and gamelan.
