   Ampel Mosque

   A mosque founded in the fifteenth century by Sunan Ampel, one of the nine saints credited with bringing Islam to Java. His tomb behind it is a pilgrimage site, and the lanes leading in are a market of dates, prayer caps and Arab food.

   Al-Akbar Mosque

   The national mosque of Surabaya, opened in 2000 and the second largest in Indonesia by capacity. Its minaret of sixty-five metres has a lift and an observation deck, which is the only way to see the whole city at once.

   Surabaya Zoo

   A zoo of fifteen hectares opened in 1916 and among the oldest in Southeast Asia, with a large collection of Indonesian species. Conditions in it have drawn sustained criticism and repeated reform attempts.

   A monument at Surabaya in East Java in Indonesia. It commemorates those killed in the battle of Surabaya on 10 November 1945 and is the emblem of the city; the museum of 10 November stands beneath it.

   Muhammad Cheng Hoo Mosque

   A mosque of 2002 built to look like a Chinese temple, with a pagoda roof and a red and gold gate, and named after the Ming admiral Zheng He, who was Muslim. It was raised by the Chinese Indonesian Muslim association.

   Surabaya Synagogue

   A synagogue in Surabaya, in a house the small Jewish community bought in 1948, and for years the only one in use in Indonesia. It was sealed in 2009 after protests and demolished in 2013.

   Church of the Birth of Our Lady, Surabaya

   The oldest Catholic church in Surabaya, completed in 1899 with twin neo-Gothic spires, and known locally by the name of its district. It survived the fighting of 1945 that destroyed much of the old town.

    House of Sampoerna

    A Dutch colonial compound of 1862, once an orphanage, which Liem Seeng Tee bought in 1932 for Sampoerna's first cigarette factory. The central auditorium now holds a tobacco museum, and hand-rollers still work in the wing behind it.
