Labuan Bajo is the harbour for Komodo National Park, where the largest lizards on earth — three metres and venomous — live on a handful of dry islands and nowhere else.

Boats go out for a day or overnight. The view from the ridge on Padar, with three differently coloured bays below, has become the image of Indonesian travel. Mantas gather at a channel nearby, and one beach is pink from crushed coral.

    Komodo National Park

    A park declared in 1980 across three main islands and their waters, holding the only wild population of Komodo dragons — some seventeen hundred of them. It became World Heritage in 1991 and its reefs are as significant as its lizards.

    Wai Sano

    A volcano in western Flores whose elliptical caldera, some 2.5 km across, holds a lake lying 260 metres below a rim that reaches 903 metres. Two fumaroles steam on the southeastern shore; no eruption has been recorded in historical times.

    A river on Flores in eastern Indonesia, running from the interior highlands to the sea through country that is dry for much of the year.

    Mirror stone cave

    A cave in a limestone hill east of Labuan Bajo whose walls glitter when the morning sun comes through a gap in the roof. Marine fossils are visible in the rock; the whole hill was under water.
