   Maimun Palace

   The palace of the Deli sultanate, built between 1888 and 1891 in yellow stucco mixing Malay, Mughal, Italian and Dutch detail. The family still occupies part of it, and the front rooms are open with the throne in place.

   Great Mosque of Medan

   A mosque in Medan begun in 1906 and completed in 1909. It was originally part of the Maimun Palace complex, built for the sultan of Deli.

   Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni

   A Marian shrine opened in 2005, built by an Indian-born priest in a deliberate mixture of Dravidian, Chinese, Batak and Indonesian forms, with a seven-storey tower over the sanctuary.

   Sri Mariamman Temple

   The oldest Hindu temple in Medan, built in 1884 for the Tamil labourers brought to the plantations, and standing in the quarter still called Kampung Madras. Its gate tower is crowded with painted deities.

   A mosque at Labuhan in Medan in North Sumatra, Indonesia. It stands twenty kilometres north of central Medan, which is why it is also called the Labuhan mosque.
