   Great Mosque of Central Java

   The provincial mosque of Central Java, opened in 2006, whose courtyard holds six giant folding umbrellas modelled on those at the Prophet's mosque in Medina. A tower of ninety-nine metres beside it has an observation deck.

   Blenduk Church

   The oldest church in Central Java, built in 1753 for the Dutch congregation, and named locally for its copper dome. It stands in the old town among the warehouses of the East India Company.

   Holy Rosary Cathedral

   The Catholic cathedral of Semarang, completed in 1927 and raised to cathedral rank in 1940 when the first Indonesian bishop, later a national hero for his role in 1945, took the see.

   Fort Willem II

   A Dutch fort of the late eighteenth century at Ungaran, guarding the road from Semarang to the courts of central Java. Prince Diponegoro was held in it in 1830 while awaiting the decision that sent him into exile.
