   Pura Ulun Danu Bratan

   A temple of 1633 on Lake Bratan at twelve hundred metres, whose eleven-tiered shrine stands on a small island and appears to float when the lake is high. It is dedicated to Dewi Danu, goddess of the water that the subak irrigation system distributes, and it is on the 50,000 rupiah note.

   Pura Luhur Batukaru

   A Balinese temple in rainforest on the southern slope of Mount Batukaru, the island's second highest volcano at 2,276 metres. One of the nine directional temples that guard Bali, it stands in mist and moss well above the villages.

   Bali Botanic Garden

   The largest botanic garden in Indonesia, opened in 1959 at Bedugul at thirteen hundred metres, where the climate allows temperate as well as tropical planting. Its orchid and fern houses are the strongest, and a treetop course runs through the pines.

   Brahmavihara-Arama

   A Buddhist monastery in the hills near Lovina in north Bali, built in 1970, with a stupa modelled on Borobudur and carving done by Balinese Hindu craftsmen. Meditation courses are held there.

   Taman Pujaan Bangsa Margarana

   The heroes' cemetery at Marga, where 1,372 graves remember the Balinese who fell against the Dutch in 1946. A tall monument marks the last stand of I Gusti Ngurah Rai and his men, who chose to fight to the death rather than surrender.
