   Maya Devi Temple

   The main temple at Lumbini, built over a marker stone that is held to fix the exact spot of the Buddha's birth. The Ashoka pillar outside, set up in 249 BC, records the emperor's visit and is the earliest evidence that the site was already identified as this.

   Ranighat Palace

   A palace of 1893 on the Kali Gandaki in Palpa district, built by a Rana general in memory of his wife and sometimes called the Taj Mahal of Nepal. It stands empty and half-ruined at the end of a long walk.

   Jama Masjid Rahmaniya, Bhairahawa

   The oldest mosque in the Rupandehi district of Nepal, completed in 1950 near the Indian border. It follows a traditional plan with a large central dome and four minarets, and its interior is worked in calligraphy.
