Banyuwangi is the eastern tip of Java and the base for Ijen, a volcano whose sulphuric gas burns electric blue in the dark. Groups leave around two in the morning to be at the vent while it still shows.

The crater holds the largest acidic lake on earth, turquoise and strong enough to dissolve metal, and miners still carry sulphur out of it by hand. The ferry to Bali takes forty minutes from Ketapang.

    Ijen

    A group of volcanoes on the boundary of two East Java regencies, the largest of them holding a crater lake a kilometre across and acidic enough to dissolve metal. Sulphur is still carried out of the vent by hand.

    Gunung Raung

    A stratovolcano of 3,344 metres in East Java and one of the most active on the island, with a caldera about two kilometres across and a cone growing inside it. Its ash closes airports across Java and Bali when it erupts.

    West Bali National Park

    A park at the western tip of Bali, and the last refuge of the Bali starling, a white bird down to a handful in the wild. The reef off Menjangan island within the park is the best diving on Bali.
