   Namgyal Monastery

   The Dalai Lama's personal monastery, refounded at McLeod Ganj in 1959 after the flight from Tibet. Teachings are given in the courtyard when he is in residence, and the monks debate in the afternoons, clapping to press a point, which visitors may watch.

   Kangra Fort, Himachal Pradesh

   One of the oldest and largest forts in the Himalaya, held by the Katoch rajas. Its temple treasury was rich enough to bring Mahmud of Ghazni here in 1009 and several invaders after him. The 1905 earthquake brought much of it down and the ruins run along a spur above two rivers.

   Vajreshwari Devi Temple, Kangra

   A temple to Durga at Kangra, one of the fifty-one shakti pithas, whose gold drew Mahmud of Ghazni to sack it in 1009. The 1905 earthquake destroyed the building and it was rebuilt in the 1920s.

   Tibet Museum

   The official museum of the Tibetan government in exile at McLeod Ganj, opened in 1998. It holds over thirty thousand photographs and the testimony of refugees, and tells the story of the occupation and the flight over the Himalaya.

   Shri Chamunda Devi Mandir

   A temple to Chamunda, a form of Durga, on the Baner river nineteen kilometres from Palampur in the Kangra valley. It is among the most visited temples in Himachal Pradesh and looks across at the Dhauladhar wall.

   Nechung monastery Dharamsala

   The monastery of the Nechung oracle, rebuilt in exile below Dharamsala in the 1980s after the original outside Lhasa was destroyed. The medium who speaks as state oracle of Tibet is consecrated here, and the Dalai Lama still consults him.
