Addu is the southernmost atoll of the Maldives, just below the equator, and the only one whose islands are joined by a road — fourteen kilometres of causeway that you can cycle end to end.

The British kept an airfield on Gan until 1976 and the hangars remain. Manta rays queue at cleaning stations on the reef, and a wartime wreck lies in shallow water. This is the Maldives without the resort model.

    Villingili

    A resort island in Addu atoll in the Maldives. In 1997 the government awarded an American company the contract for a large resort and marina, withdrew it in 2000, and had a smaller resort built by another firm.

    Gemmiskiy

    A Sunni mosque at Dhadimagu on Fuvahmulah in Gnaviyani atoll in the Maldives. It was built between about 1300 and 1378, which makes it among the oldest in the country, raised in coral stone soon after the conversion to Islam.
