Hambantota was given a deep-water port and an international airport in the 2010s, both far larger than the traffic that followed, and it is now the quickest way into Sri Lanka's dry south. Yala, ninety minutes east, has the densest leopard population of any park in the world, though the animals do not read the statistics.

Blue whales pass Mirissa between November and April, close enough that the boats need only an hour. Tangalle has the emptier beaches, and Kataragama, sacred to Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims alike, is inland.

    Bundala National Park

    A coastal park in southern Sri Lanka, a Ramsar wetland and an internationally important wintering ground for migratory waterbirds. Greater flamingos gather on its lagoons, with elephants and crocodiles inland.

    A national park and archaeological site on the south coast of Sri Lanka, a bare plateau of reddish soil where little grows — attributed in legend to Ravana's landing ground and in geology to serpentine rock. Turtles nest on the beaches below.

    Martello Tower

    A small circular fort built at Hambantota between 1804 and 1806 to protect the port after a Kandyan raid. Its form and name come from a tower in Corsica that had held off a British squadron a decade earlier.
