Darjeeling grows the tea that carries its name on a ridge at two thousand metres, and the narrow-gauge railway that climbs to it, opened in 1881, was one of the first railways on the World Heritage list.

From Tiger Hill before dawn, Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain on earth, takes the first light. Estates run tastings through the season. Sikkim and Gangtok are the next stage north.

    Bagrakote

    A village in the Dooars of West Bengal that grew around a tea garden opened by a Calcutta firm, drawing workers from the surrounding hills and from Sikkim. The plantation still sets the rhythm of the place.

    Kanchenjunga Stadium

    A multi-purpose stadium at Siliguri in India. It was built in the 1980s, holds forty thousand and is used mainly for cricket and football.

    Tashi Gomang Shedra Buddhist Monastery

    A Tibetan Buddhist monastery outside Siliguri, founded by refugee monks from Kham in the 1970s. Its stupa is about thirty metres high and holds relics given by the Dalai Lama; the grounds are quiet and open to anyone.
