   Open Hand Monument

   A sheet-metal hand twenty-six metres high that turns in the wind, designed by Le Corbusier as the emblem of Chandigarh — open to give and open to receive. It was finally built in 1985, twenty years after his death.

   Rock Garden of Chandigarh

   Nek Chand, a road inspector, began building this garden in secret in 1957 on land where he had no right to be, shaping figures from broken bangles, tiles and household waste. The authorities found it in 1975 and, instead of clearing it, opened it; it now covers 40 acres.

   Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh

   A museum holding the share of the Lahore collection that came to India at partition, divided between the two countries by agreement. Its Gandhara sculpture, Buddhist figures with Greek drapery, is the strongest part.

   Zakir Hussain Rose Garden

   A rose garden of twelve hectares laid out in 1967 and named after India's first Muslim president, with some sixteen hundred varieties — the largest such garden in Asia. A festival is held in it each February.

   Yadavindra Gardens

   A seventeenth-century Mughal garden at Pinjore, laid out in seven descending terraces with water running from one to the next — the best-preserved garden of its type in north India. It was later taken over by the Patiala rulers, whose name it now carries.

   Fateh Burj

   A victory tower of a hundred metres at Chappar Chiri in Punjab, finished in 2011 and the tallest of its kind in India. It marks the battle fought at this village in 1710, when Banda Singh Bahadur broke Mughal power in the region.

   Burail Fort

   A fort in Sector 45 of Chandigarh in India. Raghuvanshi Rajputs first raised it in the twelfth century and it took its present form in the Mughal period.

   Chhatbir Zoo

   A zoo near Zirakpur, twenty kilometres from Chandigarh in India. It was laid out in the 1970s, is formally the Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, and keeps birds, mammals and reptiles.

   Nada Sahib

   A gurdwara on the bank of the Ghaggar in the Sivalik foothills, marking the spot where Guru Gobind Singh halted on his way from Paonta Sahib to Anandpur Sahib after the battle of Bhangani in 1688. Pilgrims come in numbers at each full moon.
