   Mehrangarh Fort

   A fort on a cliff a hundred and twenty metres above the blue city, begun in 1459 and never taken by siege. Cannonball marks from a Jaipur attack are still in the gates. Its museum holds the Jodhpur royal palanquins and howdahs, and the ramparts give the whole town below.

   Jaswant Thada

   A cenotaph of Makrana marble raised in 1899 by Maharaja Sardar Singh for his father Jaswant Singh II, and the cremation ground of the Marwar rulers ever since. The marble is cut so thin that the walls glow warm against the sun; gazebos and a terraced garden drop to a small lake.

   Ghanta Ghar

   The clock tower at the heart of the old city, raised by Maharaja Sardar Singh early in the 20th century, with the Sardar market of 1912 spread around its foot. Spice, textile and vegetable stalls fill the lanes beneath the fort.

   Sardar Government Museum

   A museum in Umaid Bagh park at Jodhpur in Rajasthan. It was built under Umaid Singh in memory of his father Maharaja Sardar Singh, who ruled Jodhpur from 1895 to 1911.

   Arna Jharna Museum

   A folk museum in the village of Moklawas near Jodhpur in Rajasthan. The folklorist and ethnomusicologist Komal Kothari, who lived from 1929 to 2004, conceived it, and it opened in 2000.

   Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

   A park of seventy-two hectares near Mehrangarh Fort at Jodhpur. It was created in 2006 to restore the original ecology of the broad rock shelf below the fort, and its desert and arid-zone vegetation has been brought back.
