Lombok is separated from Bali by a strait only thirty-five kilometres wide that marks the Wallace Line, where Asian species give way to Australasian ones. It has Rinjani, an active volcano of 3,726 metres with a crater lake, and a south coast of surf beaches barely built on.

The three Gili islands off the northwest corner allow no cars or motorbikes; green turtles graze in the shallows off Gili Meno. Kuta Lombok has the surf, and Sasak villages inland still thatch and weave.

    Rinjani

    An active volcano of 3,726 metres on Lombok, among the highest in Indonesia, with a crescent lake in its caldera and a young cone growing inside it. The climb takes two to four days and is closed in the wet season.

    Mandalika International Street Circuit

    A street circuit of four and a third kilometres in the Mandalika resort on southern Lombok, opened in 2021 and holding a MotoGP round from 2022. It was built as the anchor of a large tourism scheme.
