Manado is the base for Bunaken, where the seabed drops away in walls hundreds of metres deep a short boat ride from the shore — the reason divers have come here since the 1980s.

Inland, the Tangkoko reserve holds tarsiers, the smallest primates in the world, and black crested macaques. The Minahasa highlands behind the city are cool, lake-dotted and Christian, and cook food that alarms outsiders.

    Kentur Lokon

    A volcano ten kilometres south of Manado, paired with Mount Empung two kilometres away and sharing a crater between them. It erupts often enough that the road up is closed for months at a time.

    Bunaken

    A marine park at the centre of the Coral Triangle, declared in 1991 and covering 890 square kilometres, of which 97 per cent is sea. Some 390 species of coral grow on walls that drop steeply from the shores of Bunaken, Manado Tua, Mantehage, Nain and Siladen.
