Malé packs a capital onto an island two kilometres long, and is one of the most densely populated places on earth — nothing like the postcards, and worth an hour for exactly that reason.

Seaplanes and speedboats fan out from the airport island to the resorts, one to an island. Since 2009 guesthouses have been allowed on inhabited islands like Maafushi, which puts the same water within a normal budget.

    Malé Friday Mosque

    The old Friday mosque of Malé, built in 1658 of cut coral stone, with lacquered woodwork inside and a squat coral minaret beside it. Coral gravestones fill the yard, and it is on the tentative World Heritage list.

    Islamic Centre (Maldives)

    The main mosque of the Maldives, opened in Malé in 1984, its gold dome the landmark of the city. It holds about five thousand worshippers and shares its building with an Islamic library and conference hall.

    King Salman Mosque

    A mosque on the eastern waterfront of Malé built with Saudi funding and named after the king who provided it, with room for ten thousand — among the largest in the Indian Ocean. Its opening was repeatedly delayed after completion.
