   Paro Taktsang

   A monastery built in 1692 around the cave where Padmasambhava is said to have meditated, clinging to a cliff nine hundred metres above the Paro valley. Fire gutted it in 1998 and it was rebuilt; the walk up takes two or three hours.

   Rinpung Dzong

   A large dzong above Paro, rebuilt in 1644, which houses both the district monastic body and the local government — the arrangement in every Bhutanese dzong. Its courtyard was used for the film Little Buddha.

   National Museum of Bhutan

   The national museum of Bhutan, in the round Ta Dzong watchtower raised above Paro's fortress in 1649 to guard it. Converted to a museum in 1968, its floors hold thangkas, festival masks, arms, stamps and Bhutanese textiles.

   Kyichu Lhakhang

   One of the oldest temples in Bhutan, its inner shrine dating to the seventh century and attributed to a Tibetan king. Two orange trees in the courtyard are said to bear fruit all year round.

   Drukgyal Dzong

   A fortress built in 1649 to mark the defeat of Tibetan invaders, and named for the victory of the Drukpa. Fire destroyed it in 1951 and it stood as a ruin until reconstruction began in 2016.

   Jangtsa Dumtseg Lhakhang

   A Buddhist temple on a spur between the Paro and Dopshari valleys in western Bhutan. It takes the form of a chorten, which is very rare in Bhutan, and its interior paintings run in three tiers up the tower.

   Haa Dzong

   A fortress monastery founded in 1895 beside the Haa river at 2,710 metres, built to watch the border with Tibet. It serves today as the administrative seat of the district, its whitewashed walls set against the pine slopes.
