   Mahendra Cave

   A large limestone cave at Batulechaur on the edge of Pokhara, found by shepherds in the 1950s and lit with electric lamps since. Its stalactites were once heavily damaged by souvenir-takers, which is why it is now fenced and guided.

   Tal Barahi Temple

   A two-tiered pagoda temple on an island in Phewa Lake, reached by rowing boat, and the most important shrine in Pokhara. It is dedicated to Barahi, the boar-headed form of Durga; Saturdays bring queues of boats and animal offerings.

   Bindhyabasini Temple

   One of the oldest and best-known Hindu temples in Pokhara in Nepal, dedicated to the goddess Bindhyabasini, a form of Durga.

   International Mountain Museum

   A museum opened in Pokhara on 5 February 2004 to record the mountains of Nepal and the peoples who live beneath them. Its halls hold gear from the great Himalayan expeditions, hill ethnography and a model of Manaslu.

   Bhadrakali Temple

   A Hindu temple on a small hill at Kundahar east of Pokhara in Nepal. It was built in 1817 and is dedicated to Kali, the goddess of strength and power.

   Shiva Temple

   A hilltop shrine above Pokhara at 1,500 metres, reached by a long stair and crowned by a Shiva statue 108 feet high, the second tallest in Nepal. The terrace looks out over Phewa Lake to the Annapurna wall.

   Chandikalika Temple

   A hilltop shrine at Darau in Putalibazar, in the Syangja district south of Pokhara, counted a historic as much as a religious site. Pilgrims climb to it at Dashain, and the ridge gives a long view over the Andhi Khola valley.
