   Aga Khan Palace

   Built in 1892 by Aga Khan III as famine relief, employing a hundred thousand people over five years at a cost of some 1.2 million rupees. The British held Gandhi, his wife Kasturba and his secretary Mahadev Desai here during the Quit India movement; both died in the palace, and their memorials stand in the garden.

   Shaniwar Wada

   The Peshwas' seat from 1732 until the British took Pune in 1818. A fire in 1828 left only the walls, gates and foundations, and Pune tells visitors the place is haunted by a boy prince murdered here in 1773. The fountain plan and the ramparts are what you see.

   Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum

   A museum in Pune built on the collection of Dinkar Kelkar, who spent a lifetime gathering the everyday objects of India — oil lamps, nutcrackers, door fittings, instruments. Some twenty thousand pieces are held, a fraction shown at a time.

   Dagadusheth Halwai Ganapati Temple

   A Ganesha temple founded in 1893 by a sweet-maker who had lost his son to plague. Tilak used its festival to turn Ganesh Chaturthi into a public event that could gather crowds the British could not ban, which is how the modern festival began.

   A district northwest of Pune on the Pavana river, now part of an industrial twin city. Its temple is tied to the Ganesh devotion of a seventeenth-century saint whose lineage the Peshwas patronised.

   Pataleshwar

   An eighth-century Shiva temple cut down into a basalt outcrop in the middle of Pune, with a pillared hall and a circular Nandi pavilion carved from the living rock. The work was left unfinished, which shows how it was done.
