Bintan is an hour by ferry from Singapore and has a strip of resorts and golf on its northern coast, which is what most visitors come for.

Penyengat, a small island off Tanjung Pinang, was the seat of the Riau sultans and keeps a yellow mosque said to have been built with egg white in the mortar. Mangrove trips run at night to watch fireflies in the trees.

    MV Doulos Phos

    A ship built in 1914 that held the record as the oldest ocean-going passenger vessel still working, serving until 2009 — for three decades as a floating bookshop that called at ports worldwide. She is now beached at Bintan as a hotel.

    Grand Mosque of Riau Sultan

    The mosque of the Riau sultans on Penyengat island, finished in 1832 and famously said to be mortared with egg white — thousands of eggs given by the population, whose yolks went into the workers' food. It is bright yellow, the royal colour, and holds a handwritten Quran.

    The largest mosque on Bintan, at Tanjung Uban, built between 2008 and 2012 on nearly two hectares of land endowed as a religious trust by a local ruler.
