   Attukal Temple

   A temple to Bhadrakali near the centre of the city. Its Pongala festival in February or March fills the surrounding streets with several million women cooking rice offerings on brick hearths in the open — the largest gathering of women for any religious event anywhere.

   St. Mary, Queen of Peace Basilica

   The first church of the Syro-Malankara Catholics to be raised to the rank of basilica, announced in November 2008 and dedicated that December. It stands in the Palayam quarter beside a mosque and a Hindu temple, the three sharing one stretch of road.

   Thiruvananthapuram Zoo

   A zoo of twenty-two hectares opened in 1857, among the oldest in Asia, laid out as woodland and lakes rather than as a menagerie. The state museum and art gallery stand in the same grounds, which makes the whole enclave a half-day.
