   Lake Palace

   A palace built between 1743 and 1746 on an island in Lake Pichola as a summer retreat, and covering almost all of it. It became a hotel in 1963 and appeared in a Bond film, which fixed the image of Udaipur abroad.

   Jagdish Temple, Udaipur

   A large temple of 1651 just outside the city palace, in continuous worship ever since. Thirty-two steps climb to a black stone Vishnu; the outer walls carry bands of elephants, musicians and dancers, and the brass Garuda faces the shrine from the courtyard.

   City Palace, Udaipur

   A complex begun in 1553 by the founder of Udaipur and added to by his successors for four centuries, so that eleven palaces stand in one wall. It is the largest such complex in Rajasthan and looks straight down onto the lake.

   Jag Mandir

   A palace on an island in Lake Pichola, begun in the sixteenth century and finished in 1652. The Mughal prince who became Shah Jahan sheltered here after rebelling against his father, and European families were hidden here in 1857.

   Monsoon Palace

   A hilltop palace of 1884 built to watch the monsoon clouds gather, and left incomplete when the maharana who ordered it died. It is the highest point above the city and the standard place to be at sunset.

   Shiv Niwas Palace

   A palace on the shore of Lake Pichola built as a guest house for the maharana's visitors, and now a hotel. Its crescent of rooms looks across the water to the island palaces.

   Sahastra Bahu Temples

   A pair of Hindu temples of the late tenth century at Nagda, sharing one platform above a reservoir and dedicated to Virabhadra. The larger is ringed by ten subsidiary shrines, the smaller by four.

    Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal

    A museum founded in 1952 to record the folk art of Rajasthan and its neighbours, with costume, masks, instruments and a large puppet collection. Puppet shows are performed daily, which is how the tradition has been kept working.

   Ahar Cenotaphs

   More than 250 domed chhatris of the royal house of Mewar, raised over some 350 years on the cremation ground at Ahar. Nineteen mark Maharanas of Udaipur, and the site is also called Mahasati, for the wives who burned alongside them.

   Gulab Bagh and Zoo

   The largest garden in Udaipur at forty hectares, laid out from 1878 by the maharana whose name it carries. It is known for the number of rose varieties in it and holds a small zoo and a library.
