Bacolod is the sugar capital of Negros and calls itself the city of smiles. Its MassKara festival, begun in 1980 during a crash in sugar prices, fills October with masked dancers.

The Ruins at Talisay is the shell of a mansion an heir built for his Portuguese wife and set alight in the war to keep it from the Japanese. Chicken inasal, grilled over coconut husk, was invented here.

    San Diego Pro-cathedral

    An early 20th-century church in Silay, raised to pro-cathedral in 1994 and still the only one in the Philippines. Its cupola is the only dome on a church in Negros Occidental, and it stands among the ancestral houses of the old sugar town.

    A Catholic church of the late nineteenth century at Bacolod in Negros Occidental in the Philippines, and the seat of the diocese of Bacolod.

    Bacolod Public Plaza

    A square in central Bacolod, near the old city hall and opposite San Sebastian Cathedral. Its formal name, 6 November Square, comes from the day Spain surrendered Negros to the revolutionaries; trees ring the trapezoidal ground with a bandstand at the centre.

    Fountain of Justice

    A monument in Bacolod marking the site of the house of José Luis de Luzuriaga. It was here on 6 November 1898 that the Spanish authorities surrendered Bacolod to the Filipino forces under General Aniceto Lacson.
