   Barasoain Church

   A church of 1888 at Malolos where the revolutionary congress met and drafted the constitution of 1899, the first republican constitution in Asia. It appears on the ten-peso note and is called the cradle of democracy in the East.

   Clark Freeport and Special Economic Zone

   The former American air base, abandoned after Pinatubo buried it in 1991 and declared a freeport two years later. Its runways now take passenger flights and its open ground holds a hot-air balloon festival each February.

   San Fernando Cathedral

   The cathedral of San Fernando in Pampanga, founded in 1755 and destroyed twice — in the revolution and again in the Second World War. The neoclassical building standing now is the third on the site.

   A baroque church at Guagua whose wooden ceiling is painted end to end with biblical scenes, work of the nineteenth century that has earned it the name of the Philippine Sistine Chapel. It is a national cultural treasure.

   Baliwag Church

   An Augustinian church of 1733 at Baliwag in Bulacan, and a centre of the revolt against Spain in this province. Its stone walls and bell tower served as a strongpoint as much as a parish church.

   San Guillermo Parish Church

   The church at Bacolor, buried to the roofline by lahars after Pinatubo erupted in 1991. The congregation dug out what it could and now worships at the level of the old clerestory windows, with the original ceiling close overhead and the buried church below the floor.

   A memorial at Camp O'Donnell in Tarlac, the camp at the end of the Bataan Death March where thousands of Filipino and American prisoners died in 1942. A stone obelisk stands over a wall carrying the names.

   A Spanish-era church at Plaridel in Bulacan, its stone walls thick enough to serve as a refuge as well as a parish church. The bell tower doubled as a lookout over the surrounding plain.
