Legazpi lives under Mayon, a volcano whose cone is close to geometrically perfect and which is also among the most active in the Philippines.

The belfry at Cagsawa is all that shows above the ground of a church buried by the eruption of 1814, and the view past it to the summit is the country's most photographed. Bicol cooks with chilli and coconut milk.

    Mayon Volcano Natural Park

    A protected area of nearly six thousand hectares around Mayon, the most active volcano in the Philippines with over fifty eruptions recorded in five centuries. A permanent danger zone keeps settlement off the lower slopes.

    Cagsawa Ruins

    The remains of a Franciscan church of 1587 buried by the eruption of 1814, which killed over a thousand people sheltering in and around it. Only the belfry stands above the hardened ash, with the volcano behind it.

    Daraga Church

    A church of 1772 at Daraga in Albay, built of volcanic stone with a facade carved in deep relief and set on a hill above the town. It is a declared national cultural treasure.

    Albay Cathedral

    The cathedral of Legazpi in the old Albay district, dedicated to Gregory the Great and the seat of the diocese. A historical marker was placed on it in 2018.
