   Minor Basilica of the Holy Child

   A basilica founded in 1565 holding the image of the Christ child that Magellan gave to the queen of Cebu in 1521 — the oldest Christian relic in the Philippines. Its January festival brings a million people into the streets.

   Magellan’s Cross

   Magellan's Cross is the successor to the cross raised in 1521 to mark the baptism of the king and queen of Cebu. With the painted ceiling of its octagonal pavilion it marks the beginning of Christianity in the Philippines.

   Fort San Pedro

   The oldest and smallest fort in the Philippines, first built in wood in 1565 and rebuilt in coral stone from 1738. Its triangular walls guard the harbour and now enclose a garden.

   Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral

   The cathedral of Cebu, rebuilt in the eighteenth century in a squat baroque designed against earthquakes and typhoons. Bombing in 1945 left only the facade and belfry; the 2013 earthquake damaged it again.

   Museo Sugbo

   The provincial museum of Cebu, housed in the old provincial jail of 1871, which held prisoners until 2004. Its cell blocks now carry galleries running from pre-colonial finds through the Spanish and American periods to the Second World War.

   Magellan Monument

   A memorial park on Mactan holding an obelisk of 1866 to Magellan and a bronze of Lapulapu, the chief who killed him on this shore in April 1521. The two monuments stand within sight of each other.

   Cebu Taoist Temple

   A Taoist temple built in 1972 in a hillside subdivision above Cebu City, reached by a stair of eighty-one steps. It serves the Chinese Filipino community and gives the best view over the city.

   Cathedral Museum of Cebu

   The archdiocesan museum of Cebu, in the old rectory beside the cathedral, reopened in 2006. It holds church silver, ivory images and vestments, and explains how Catholicism took the form it did in the Visayas.

   Liberty Shrine

   The memorial park on Mactan where Magellan was killed in April 1521, holding monuments to both him and Lapulapu. The battle is re-enacted on the shore each year on the anniversary.

    Matilda L. Bradford Memorial Church

    A Protestant church in Cebu City built in 1913 and the only one in the province declared a national historical landmark. It marks the arrival of American missions after 1898.
