   Speicherstadt

   The largest warehouse district in the world, built between 1883 and 1927 on oak piles driven into the riverbed, with loading doors on the canal side and the street side both. Coffee, tea, spices and carpets were stored here duty-free; it became World Heritage in 2015.

   St. Pauli

   The quarter of the Reeperbahn, where rope for the port was once made and where everything else has happened since. The Beatles played five hundred nights in its clubs between 1960 and 1962 and learned to be a band; the football club is the most politically self-conscious in Germany.

   Hamburger Kunsthalle

   The city art museum, opened in 1869, and where German Romanticism is best seen — Friedrich's Wanderer above the Sea of Fog hangs here, along with Runge and a strong nineteenth-century French room.

   St. Nicholas Church, Hamburg

   A Gothic revival church whose tower, at a hundred and forty-seven metres, was briefly the tallest building in the world. The firestorm of July 1943 gutted it, and the city chose to leave the tower standing as a memorial rather than rebuild; a lift now goes up it.

   Miniatur Wunderland

   The largest model railway in the world, in two Speicherstadt warehouses, with something like sixteen kilometres of track and whole countries reproduced in miniature. It is the most visited attraction in Hamburg, which says something about German engineering and something about Hamburg.

   St. Michaelis Church, Hamburg

   The baroque main church of 1786, whose copper spire has been the landmark for ships coming up the Elbe for two centuries. A lift and then stairs reach the platform at eighty-two metres, and the crypt below holds the tombs of the merchant families.

   HafenCity

   A new quarter of some hundred and fifty hectares built on the old port area from 2003 — the largest inner-city development in Europe. The Elbphilharmonie of 2017 stands at its tip, a glass wave on a brick warehouse, ten times over budget and worth it.

   Tierpark Hagenbeck

   A zoo opened in 1907 by Carl Hagenbeck, who invented the enclosure without bars — using moats and artificial rock so that animals appear against open sky. Every modern zoo in the world descends from what he did on this ground.

   Islamic Centre Hamburg

   The organisation that ran the Imam Ali mosque, the blue-domed building on the Alster and the oldest mosque in Hamburg, built by Iranian residents around 1960. The German government banned the centre in July 2024, finding it an arm of the Iranian state.

    Kontorhaus District

    The office quarter built in the 1920s in dark brick expressionism, and World Heritage since 2015 with the Speicherstadt. The Chilehaus of 1924 is the building to see: its eastern corner is drawn out into a sharp prow, like a ship coming at you down the street.

   A Sunni mosque that opened in Hamburg in 1993 and was closed by the German authorities in 2010. It had become known for radical preaching.

   Ohlsdorf Cemetery

   The largest rural cemetery in the world, three hundred and ninety hectares with something like a million and a half burials, laid out as a park with lakes, chapels and two bus routes running through it. Both the bombing dead of 1943 and the city's famous citizens are here.

   Finkenwerder

   A quarter of Hamburg on the south bank of the Elbe. It was a fishing and shipbuilding village; the Airbus assembly plant now occupies the waterfront, and aircraft fuselages arrive by barge.

   A monument to Otto von Bismarck in the St Pauli district. It is the largest and best known of the 240 Bismarck monuments in the world.

   Hamburg Stadtpark

   A municipal park of 148 hectares at Winterhude in Hamburg-Nord, the second largest in the city after the Altonaer Volkspark. It lies some three kilometres from the centre and is known as the green heart of Hamburg.

   Fuhlsbüttel

   The northern quarter holding the airport, opened in 1911 and one of the oldest still operating anywhere. Its prison was used as a concentration camp from 1933, known by the abbreviation Kola-Fu, and a memorial now stands on the site.

   St. Catherine's Church, Hamburg

   One of Hamburg's five principal Lutheran churches, standing on an island by the old harbour and long the seamen's church. The base of its spire dates from the 13th century, making it the second oldest building in the city; the rest was rebuilt after the firestorm of 1943.

   Eppendorf

   A residential quarter of Hamburg north of the Alster. It was developed as a villa district in the nineteenth century, leaving tree-lined streets and low houses, and one of the largest university hospitals in Germany stands within it.

   Wilhelmsburg

   A quarter on an island between two arms of the Elbe, one of the largest inhabited river islands in Europe. The storm surge of February 1962 broke the dykes here and killed over two hundred people, most of the total for the whole city.

    St. Peter’s Church

    The oldest church in Hamburg, on ground that has held one since the eleventh century. The bronze lion's-head door handle of 1342 on its west door is the oldest work of art in the city, and four hundred and thirty steps climb the tower.
