   Commerzbank Tower

   Norman Foster's tower of 1997, two hundred and fifty-nine metres to the roof and three hundred with the mast, the tallest building in Germany. It was the first ecological high-rise, with nine four-storey sky gardens spiralling up the shaft to ventilate the offices naturally.

   Messeturm

   A tower of 1991, two hundred and fifty-seven metres with a pyramid on top, and the tallest building in Europe when it opened. Frankfurters call it the pencil, and it marks the trade fair grounds it was built to serve.

   Städel Museum

   Founded in 1815 by a banker who left his collection and his fortune to the city as a citizens' institution, and one of the best-arranged museums in Germany — seven hundred years in one route. The 2012 extension is underground, lit through round skylights set in the lawn above.

   St. Paul's Church, Frankfurt am Main

   The church in which the first freely elected German parliament met in 1848, drafting a constitution that was never enacted — a failure that Germany has treated ever since as its democratic origin. It was rebuilt in 1948 as a plain assembly hall rather than a church.

   Frankfurt Cathedral

   The church in which the Holy Roman emperors were elected from 1356 and crowned from 1562 — never a bishop's seat, so the name cathedral is honorary. Its red sandstone tower can be climbed, and the election chapel is still shown.

   The second largest natural history museum in Germany and the one with the biggest dinosaur hall — mounted skeletons rather than casts wherever possible, and a diplodocus down the middle. The institute behind it runs research stations on three continents.

   Europaturm

   A telecommunications tower of 1979 rising three hundred and thirty-seven metres, the tallest structure in Frankfurt. Its revolving restaurant and observation deck have been closed to the public since 1999, so it is admired only from below.

   Zeil

   Shopping street in Frankfurt, pedestrianised in 1983 and among the highest-turnover retail streets in Germany. It ran as a promenade for the imperial coronations until 1792.

   Römerberg

   The old market square, whose east side is a row of half-timbered houses rebuilt in 1986 from photographs — the originals burned in 1944. The town hall opposite is genuine behind its restored gables, and the Christmas market here is one of Germany's oldest.

    Goethe House

    The house where Goethe was born in 1749, rebuilt after the war from measured drawings and refurnished with the family's own pieces, which had been removed for safety. The puppet theatre that started him writing is on the second floor.

   The Jewish ghetto of Frankfurt, which existed from 1462 to 1811 and was among the earliest in Germany. The largest Jewish community in early modern Germany lived in it.

   Saalburg Roman Fort

   A Roman auxiliary fort on the Taunus ridge, rebuilt between 1897 and 1907 on Wilhelm II's orders — the most completely reconstructed Roman fort in Germany, with barracks, granary and gate standing full height. It is part of the Upper German limes World Heritage listing.

   Palmengarten

   A botanical garden opened in 1871 by a company of citizens who bought a bankrupt duke's plant collection and put it up for shares. Its palm house and the run of climate greenhouses make it the standard Frankfurt answer to rain.

   Westend

   District of Frankfurt laid out from 1830 for the merchant families, with villas along the Palmengarten. Bank towers now stand at its eastern edge.

   Frankfurt Zoological Garden

   A zoo of 1858, the second oldest in Germany, rebuilt after the war by Bernhard Grzimek, whose television programmes made conservation a mainstream German concern. It holds over four thousand animals on eleven hectares in the middle of the city.

   Museum für Moderne Kunst

   A museum of modern art in Hans Hollein's building of 1991, a wedge-shaped plot that he turned into a triangular plan Frankfurters call the slice of cake. Its collection is strong on the 1960s onward and it commissions work for the spaces.

   Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt

   An exhibition hall of 1986 between the town hall and the cathedral that owns no collection at all — it mounts eight or so shows a year and nothing else, which lets it be quicker and riskier than the museums around it.

   Old St. Nicholas church

   A medieval church on the Römerberg in Frankfurt. It served as the court chapel at the election and coronation of Holy Roman emperors, and its carillon still rings out over the square several times a day.

    Frankfurter Engel

    A memorial of 1994 to gay men and women persecuted under the Nazis and, afterwards, under the same paragraph of the criminal code that West Germany kept until 1969. It was the first such monument in Germany and has been repeatedly vandalised and repeatedly repaired.
