   Erfurt Cathedral

   The largest and oldest church in Erfurt, rising on its mound above the Domplatz beside St Severus and reached by a fan of seventy steps. Founded in 742 and rebuilt in Gothic form, it holds the Gloriosa, cast in 1497 and among the largest free-swinging medieval bells in the world.

   Old Synagogue (Erfurt)

   The old synagogue of Erfurt, going back to the late eleventh century and among the best preserved medieval synagogues in Europe. Most of the present fabric dates from about 1250 to 1320, and the Erfurt treasure hoard is displayed in its cellar.

   Petersberg Citadel

   A fortress on the hill above the old town of Erfurt. It was built from the seventeenth century with star-shaped bastions and is among the largest and best-preserved baroque citadels left in central Europe.

   Preacher's Church

   A Dominican church in Erfurt. The medieval mystic Meister Eckhart lived and preached in this friary, and the cloister of that period survives.

   Ägidienkirche (Erfurt)

   The surviving bridgehead church at the eastern end of the Kraemerbruecke, its archway carrying the street straight onto the bridge. The single-nave Gothic building dates from the 15th century, and its tower opens for a view down over the shops that line the crossing.

   Bachkirche Arnstadt

   A Baroque hall church built between 1676 and 1683 after fire destroyed its predecessor in 1581. Johann Sebastian Bach, then 18, tested the new Wender organ of 21 stops in June 1703 and was hired as organist, his first post; the church took his name in 1935.

   Ettersburg Castle and Park

   A castle and park at Ettersburg outside Erfurt. It was the summer residence of the ducal house of Weimar, and the place where Goethe and Schiller came to stage amateur theatricals.

   A Lutheran parish church raised through the 12th and 13th centuries and reckoned, with Naumburg Cathedral, the most important building of the Romanesque-to-Gothic transition in Thuringia. The counts of Schwarzburg lie buried in its choir.
