   Rheinturm

   A concrete telecommunications tower of 1982, 240.5 metres high. The strip of round windows running up the shaft is a clock: the lights read off the time in tens of hours, hours, tens of minutes and so on, which makes it the largest digital clock in the world.

   Neanderthal Museum

   A museum opened in 1996 in the Neander valley near Düsseldorf, where quarrymen found the first recognised Neanderthal bones in 1856. Its exhibits follow human evolution from the earliest hominids to the present.

   Museum Kunstpalast

   Dusseldorf's main art museum, filling the Ehrenhof complex that Wilhelm Kreis built beside the Rhine in the 1920s. Its holdings run from medieval sculpture to modern painting, and the Hentrich glass collection of some 13,000 pieces is among the largest in Europe.

   Basilica of St. Quirinus

   Built between 1209 and 1230 and among the finest Romanesque churches in Germany, with Lombard detail and the first hints of Gothic in its tower. It honours St Quirinus, whose relics reached Neuss in 1050 as a gift from Pope Leo IX; Benedict XVI made it a minor basilica in 2009.

   Kleine Feldhofer Grotte

   A limestone cave and palaeoanthropological site in the Neander valley in western Germany. In August 1856 quarrymen found the top of a skull and several bones here, and they became the type specimen of Neanderthal man.

    St. Lambertus

    The oldest parish church in Duesseldorf, begun in 1288, whose twisted spire is the best-known outline in the city — warped, the story goes, as the timber dried. The relics of St Apollinaris rest inside, and Paul VI made it a minor basilica in 1974.

   Castle Dyck

   A moated castle on the Rhineland plain at Juechen, its buildings grouped across four islands within the water. The English landscape park was laid out from 1794 for Prince Joseph of Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck, a serious botanist, and the estate now runs a centre for garden art.

   Church of St. Andrew

   A baroque church built between 1622 and 1629 as the Jesuit court church, its white stucco interior lined with figures of the apostles. The Wittelsbach electors lie in the mausoleum behind the choir, and Dominican friars have served the parish since 1972.
