   Bremen Roland

   A stone statue of Roland, five metres high, set up in Bremen's market square in 1404 to assert the city's market rights and its freedom from the archbishop. It has been World Heritage, with the town hall behind it, since 2004.

   Bremen Cathedral

   The twin-towered St Petri Dom on the market square, founded as a wooden church by Bishop Willehad in 789 and rebuilt in stone from the 11th century. Seat of the prince-archbishops who once ruled the region, it has been Lutheran since the Reformation and a protected monument since 1973.

   Kunsthalle Bremen

   An art museum of 1849 on Bremen's Culture Mile, founded and still owned by a private citizens' association rather than the state — unusual in Germany. Its Delacroix, Van Gogh and German Romantic holdings are strong, and about 1,700 works looted by the Red Army in 1945 remain missing.

   Fallturm Bremen

   A 146-metre drop tower at the University of Bremen's centre for applied space technology, in which experiments fall through an evacuated tube to produce about 4.7 seconds of weightlessness. A catapult at the base doubles that; it is one of very few such facilities in Europe.

   Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum

   A museum on Böttcherstrasse opened in 1927 for the painter Paula Modersohn-Becker, generally reckoned the first museum anywhere devoted to a woman artist. Bernhard Hoetger designed the brick expressionist building around it.

   Saint Martin's Church, Bremen

   A brick church on the Schlachte quay by the Weser, first built about 1229 and rebuilt in Gothic form in the 14th century. Destroyed in the raid of 1944 and restored by 1960, it stands among the oldest churches in Bremen and is much used for organ recitals.

   Church of Our Lady (Bremen)

   A Protestant church northwest of the Market Square whose crypt dates from the eleventh century, making it the oldest church in Bremen. Alfred Manessier's stained glass of the 1960s fills the windows, an unusual pairing with Romanesque fabric.

   Universum Science Center

   A science museum in a building shaped like a silver mussel shell, with about 250 exhibits on humanity, nature and technology, nearly all of them hands-on. An outdoor tower and discovery park adjoin it.

   Übersee-Museum Bremen

   A museum opposite Bremen's main station that began as a merchants' collection of objects brought back through the port, and still combines ethnography, natural history and trade history in one building. Its reconstructed Pacific and Asian rooms are the core.

    St. John's Church

    A brick Gothic hall church in the old town, built in the 14th century for the Franciscans, whose rule explains its lack of a tower. It serves today as Bremen's Catholic provost church and has been a listed monument since 1973.

   A 235-metre telecommunications tower at Bremen-Walle, the tallest structure in the city, closed to the public. It is visible across the flat country west of the centre.

   Rhododendron-Park Bremen

   A 46-hectare park holding the largest collection of rhododendrons and azaleas in the world, with about ten thousand varieties, alongside a substantial botanical garden. The main flowering runs from late April into June.

   Hemelingen

   A district in the southeast of Bremen on the Weser, which industrialised early and still holds motor and food manufacturing. It was an independent municipality until 1939.

   Weserburg

   A modern art museum opened in 1991 in an old factory on the Teerhof peninsula in the Weser. It was Europe's first collectors' museum, keeping no permanent holdings of its own but showing private collections in rotation across one of the largest modern-art floors in Germany.

   Focke Museum

   The history and art museum of Bremen city and state, on a park estate in Schwachhausen, holding the original medieval sculptures taken from the town hall facade. Relocated farmhouses and a windmill stand in the grounds.

   Botanika

   An indoor botanical experience centre inside the Rhododendron Park, whose greenhouses opened in 2003 recreate the habitats of Japan, Borneo and New Guinea — the places the park's rhododendrons originally come from.

    Gerhard Marcks House

    A sculpture museum beside the market square devoted to Gerhard Marcks, the twentieth-century sculptor whose work was condemned as degenerate by the Nazis. It holds his estate and shows other modern sculpture alongside.
