   Wat Rong Khun

   A temple begun in 1997 by the artist Chalermchai Kositpipat and still unfinished, built white and set with mirror glass so that it glitters. The bridge to it crosses a sea of reaching hands, and the murals inside include aircraft and film characters.

   The largest Sunni mosque in Chiang Rai province, built by the Chin Ho — Chinese Muslims who came down the caravan routes from Yunnan and settled in the northern towns.

   Wat Phra Kaeo

   The temple where the Emerald Buddha, now in Bangkok, is said to have been found in 1434 after lightning split its stupa. A jade replica was carved in 1991 and the temple was raised to royal rank in 1978.

   A fourteenth-century temple in central Chiang Rai that once held the Phra Singh Buddha, later moved to Chiang Mai. Its wooden hall and carved doors are the work of local craftsmen.

   Lam Nam Kok National Park

   A national park of six hundred square kilometres along the Kok river in Chiang Rai province, declared in 2002. It holds hot springs, waterfalls and forested hills that the river is rafted through.

   Wat Phra That Doi Khao Khwai Kaeo

   A hill temple southwest of Chiang Rai said to hold a relic of the Buddha's wrist. The climb up to it gives the best view over the town and the river valley.

   Wat Rong Suea Ten

   A temple finished in 2016 by a student of the artist who built the white temple, and painted throughout in sapphire blue with gold. A white seated Buddha at the far end of the hall is what most people come for.

   Baan Dam Museum

   A private compound of some forty black timber buildings assembled by the artist Thawan Duchanee, filled with animal bones, hides and horns. It is meant as a counterweight to the white temple across town, and it works.

    The Navel City Pillar of Chiang Rai

    The city pillar of Chiang Rai, in the grounds of a hilltop temple, raised in 1987 for the king's sixtieth birthday and the city's seven hundred and twenty-fifth year. It stands in a stepped stone platform representing the cosmos.
