   Buddha Park

   A meadow by the Mekong filled with more than two hundred concrete figures, Buddhist and Hindu together, made from 1958 by a self-taught holy man. A pumpkin-shaped structure at its centre is entered through a demon's mouth and climbed through hell, earth and heaven.

   A historical park at Ban Phue in Udon Thani province in Thailand. Shrines have been built around a field of strangely shaped rock formations, and some of the rocks carry prehistoric paintings.

   A sculpture park on the Thai bank of the Mekong at Nong Khai, made by the same holy man who built the Buddha park across the river, after he fled Laos in 1975. Its concrete figures are larger and stranger than the earlier set.

   A forest monastery in Udon Thani founded in 1955 by Ajahn Maha Bua, one of the best-known teachers of the Thai forest tradition. The monks live under the trees with almost nothing; visitors are welcome but the routine is not adjusted for them.
