Nakhon Si Thammarat was a kingdom in its own right and brought Sri Lankan Buddhism to the Thai peninsula. Wat Phra Mahathat's white chedi, topped in gold, has stood over the town for eight centuries.

Khiriwong, in the hills behind, is said to have the cleanest air in Thailand and takes guests into its orchards. Khao Luang, the peninsula's highest mountain, rises straight behind it.

    Wat Phra Mahathat

    The chief temple of southern Thailand, whose chedi of seventy-seven metres was built in the Sri Lankan manner and is said to hold a tooth of the Buddha. Its gold-covered spire is renewed by public subscription.
