   Patong

   Patong is Phuket's busiest beach, where the nights of Bangla Road and the days on the sand stand in flat contradiction. Every activity booking and every negotiation on the island starts on this street.

   Phuket Giant Buddha

   A seated Buddha forty-five metres high in white marble on the Nakkerd ridge, begun in 2004 and paid for by donations. The platform around it opens on the whole south of Phuket, and is at its best towards sunset.

   Hat Kata

   A beach running a kilometre and a half along the west coast of Phuket, lined with hotels and restaurants. The bay is sheltered enough for swimming through most of the season and holds a small island offshore.

   Karon Beach

   A long white beach south of Patong whose sand squeaks underfoot — singing sand, from the roundness of the grains. It is quieter than Patong and largely given over to families.

   Wat Chalong

   The largest and busiest temple on Phuket, associated with a nineteenth-century abbot who treated the wounded of a miners' rebellion with herbal medicine. Its three-tiered chedi holds a relic and can be climbed for the view.

   Kamala beach

   A beach and village on the west coast of Phuket, between Patong and Surin. It is quieter than its neighbours, with a curve of sand backed by hills and a Muslim fishing village behind it.

   HMS Stoic

   A Royal Navy S-class submarine of the third group, built during the Second World War. She survived the war and was broken up in 1950, having spent her operational career in Far Eastern waters.

   Kata Noi beach

   A small bay on the southwest coast of Phuket, separated from the larger Kata beach by a headland. Resorts hold most of the frontage, but the sand is public and the swimming is calmer.

   A Taoist shrine in Phuket Town and the heart of the rituals of the Vegetarian (Nine Emperor Gods) Festival. It is one stop on a walk through the old town.

    Rawai

    A beach at the southern tip of Phuket where longtail boats leave for the islands offshore. It is not a swimming beach; it is where the seafood restaurants and the boat charters are, and a sea-gypsy village stands at one end.
