   Wat Phra Yai

   A temple on a small island off the northeast corner of Ko Samui, joined by a causeway, holding a gold-painted Buddha twelve metres high that faces the sea. It is the island's emblem and a sunset stop.

   Chaweng

   The largest beach on Ko Samui, six kilometres of sand on the east coast backed by everything from resorts to hostels. The reef offshore keeps the water calm, and the nightlife is the island's loudest.

   Wat Plai Laem

   A modern Buddhist temple on Ko Samui which, like the Big Buddha temple of Wat Phra Yai nearby, combines Chinese and Thai elements. The Thai artist Jarit Phumdonming worked on its design, and the eighteen-armed Guanyin stands over the lake.
